From the primary colours of Newcastle’s Byker Wall to the global stages of music and fashion, Jimmy Turrell has redefined modern visual storytelling. Hear first hand about his journey collaborating with legends like Beck, The Chemical Brothers, and The Rolling Stones, and how he balances high-profile campaigns for brands like Nike, Adidas, and HUGO Boss with his raw, experimental roots.
With a portfolio spanning The New York Times to the estates of Elvis and Aretha Franklin, Jimmy is a pioneer of the "analogue-digital" movement. His work on Beck’s Colors and Hyperspace earned him critical acclaim and Grammy nominations, proving that even in a digital age, the most powerful visuals are often built by hand.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to learn from one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary graphic art.
"UNSLEEVED"
UNSLEEVED is a hands-on collage workshop where participants create a completely new visual identity for a piece of music they love.
Using cut-up techniques, found imagery, text, and a series of playful, chance-based prompts (including dice rolls), the session invites people to reimagine a favourite album or song in a completely different way – changing the mood, era, style and meaning of the original.
Rather than recreating existing album artwork, the aim is to move as far away from the original as possible and create something unexpected, personal and visually bold.
How it works
Participants will choose a favourite album or song and use collage to build an alternative cover, poster or sleeve.
The session includes:
- a short introduction to collage and album artwork
- guided prompts to help rethink the music visually
- chance-based elements to push ideas in unexpected directions
- hands-on making with a range of materials
The challenge
Create the wrong artwork for the right music.
Who it’s for
Open to all levels. No experience needed.
Outcome
Participants will leave with a finished artwork and a new way of approaching image-making.
Materials
All materials will be provided. Participants are also welcome to bring their own magazines or reference material if they’d like.
